By Bridget Rutherford THE REOPENING of Sydenham Park has been delayed for a fourth time due to wet weather. City council neighbourhood and sports parks operation manager Al Hardy said the renovations will now be completed by April 1 in time to host matches in the Christchurch Casino Golden Oldies Sports Celebration 2018. “The grass is in its grow-in phase and we anticipate that the grounds could start to be utilised progressively from early April.” The work to install four cricket blocks and three sand carpet playing fields began in April last year. Originally it was meant to be finished by July. That was then delayed until October due to bad weather. The city council then pushed that out until February. The city council told Southern View it has now been delayed again until April. Mr Hardy said the delays had been directly attributed to wet or extreme weather conditions during winter. “In August last year we did plan to have the project completed in February, however, the wet weather in August and early September caused further delays to the commencement of the three month grow-in period for the turf.” •Turn to page 7

There are thousands upon thousands of people who take part in those activities but only a tiny fraction of that number make it to the top. One of those who has that potential features in today’s paper. Conor McLennan has a chance to live the surfing dream – that is making a career out of it. From Waimairi beach, but now based at an academy at Kiwi surfing mecca, Raglan, he has just won the national under-18 title. That will hopefully springboard him into the national team where events further afield from our shores will beckon. A bright future ahead I suspect. - Barry Clarke

Woolston Cut dredging starts
By Bridget Rutherford A PROJECT to dredge the Woolston Cut begins this week. City Care will do the work, which is taking place between the flood control gates at Connal St and Long St. The project is expected to be completed by June. Several small dams would be constructed in the waterway to allow the silt to be removed by a long reach excavator. It would then be loaded on trucks and taken away to be disposed. During the work, each section will be fenced off and there will be no access to the Heathcote River and walkways in the work area. The cut was built in the 1980s to prevent flooding in the lower Heathcote River area, and for other catchment-wide improvements, such as the upper Heathcote detention basins. Water from the Heathcote flows into the cut, which can then be opened during floods using the tidal barrage. The city council decided to dredge the cut so it continued to provide effective flood remediation. It is currently about 50 per cent full of silt and liquefaction. Originally the project was

BOY RACER RULES The hearing panel on proposed boy racer vehicle restrictions on Summit Rd is likely to be led by city councillor David East. The city council will meet on Thursday to approve the makeup of the panel. Deputy Mayor Andrew Turner, city councillor Tim Scandrett, and community board members Melanie Coker, Ross McFarlane, Darrell Latham and Christine Wilson have been put forward as panel members. The proposal would prohibit vehicles under 3500kg on Summit Rd, between Rapaki and Gebbies Pass Rds, and on Worsleys Rd from 10pm-5am, Thursday to Monday, and on public holidays.

meant to start in October, but asbestos was found in the silt, which caused it to be delayed. Because of the contamination, it was expected to cost slightly more than the original $2.3 million budget. Contamination mitigation
strategies have been developed to ensure contaminated silt will be removed and disposed of safely and at the right facility. However, the majority of the silt is not contaminated. The city council has also installed rubbish booms in the
Heathcote and Avon rivers, which gather floating debris. It is then harvested by City Care and sent to landfill. Booms were previously deployed in this way but were removed following the earthquakes.
DYERS PASS RD MEETING A joint meeting between the Spreydon-Cashmere and Banks Peninsula community boards to discuss the proposed Dyers Pass Rd speed limit changes and no passing lines has been tentatively set for March 2. The city council is looking at introducing a flat speed limit of 60km/h from the Sign of the Takahe to the intersection of Governors Bay and Dyers Pass Rds. During the meeting, the boards will make a recommendation to the city council regarding the proposed changes.

Dream job of keeping abreast of bugs BRIAN PATRICK loves bugs. The Woolston entomologist and ecologist won’t leave home without a jar in his pocket just in case he spots a rare specimen. Creepy crawlies aren’t everyone’s favourite thing, but Mr Patrick, who works for Wildlands Consultants, is in the middle of his dream job, collecting insects at the Botanic Gardens. Mr Patrick has been tasked by the city council’s parks conservation team with a summer survey of the small fauna living in the central city park, including butterflies, moths, cicadas, grasshoppers, weta, crickets, praying mantis, cockroaches, stick insects, beetles, dragonflies, bees and flies. He believes the survey is a trailblazer and shows that a botanic gardens is full of exciting wildlife. “This is a New Zealand first. Nobody has ever been brave enough to do this before. I’ve already found plenty of unusual species. The native brooms have been yielding a lot of surprises, especially interesting caterpillars.” The work, which he is carrying out during the day and at night, is mainly funded by Friends of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
NATURE: If you are in the Botanic Gardens keep an eye out for Woolston’s Brian Patrick who is surveying bugs.
Visitors to the gardens have been fascinated to see him bashing bushes, walking around with a net, and crawling on his hands and knees on the ground. At night, usually between 10pm and midnight, he uses a 160 watt UV light and a white sheet to trap moths and butterflies and other nocturnal insects. After he finishes his survey
in late summer he will present the gardens with a pinned and named collection of dried insects in entomological boxes. He will explain the significance of his findings including noting which are new, threatened or endangered species. Botanic Gardens curator John Clemens said the survey results will provide valuable information
on plants the insects are associating with which will help guide future decisions. “By improving our plant collection we can also look after the insect life. We’re intrigued to see what Brian will come up with about the ecology of the gardens,” he said. Mr Patrick is an expert on the order lepidoptera, a large group
of insects that includes moths and butterflies. He started collecting bugs as a 10-year-old living in Invercargill and still has records of his first trip on January 1, 1970, when he began a database. Since then he has carried out about 3770 bug hunting trips. Why does he love insects so much? “I think I’m driven by patterns. I like the striking patterns on their wings, the distribution patterns, and patterns in the way they interact with the plants they feed on. I’m a mathematically trained person so that makes it really rewarding when you come to predictions based on your observations.”

Denton group thankful for support By Emily O’Connell A COUNTRY rugby club is getting behind its Hornby ‘friends’ in a bid to stop the city council’s plan to build a $35.7 million mega centre in Denton Park. Darfield rugby club president Scott McIlroy said it will do whatever is needed to help the Hornby Rugby Football Club. “If they’re trying to close Denton Park, we’ll definitely be in behind them to try and keep it going,” he said. The proposed facility has been highly controversial with sports clubs fearful of losing their home grounds. Mr McIlroy said he’s not sure what they can do to assist yet. “No, I don’t know what options are available but I’m sure we’ll look at anything that helps them tick along,” he said. Hornby club chairwoman Lyn Hucklebridge is grateful for the support and she hopes more clubs follow suit. Mrs Hucklebridge said the Save Denton Park group will discuss what Darfield could do and get back to them. “What we need is for everyone to be outspoken about the whole process,” she said. Taggers hit Halswell By Emily O’Connell HALSWELL residents are concerned with the amount of graffiti which has appeared in their suburb. City council graffiti clean-up volunteer and Halswell Residents’ Association treasurer Matt Shallcrass said State Highway 75 in Halswell is a popular spot for vandalism. “I think it’s just people passing through the area,” he said. Mr Shallcrass has reported eight graffiti incidents in Halswell already this month. Which is a large increase compared to his one report in December and two in November. He uses the city council’s Snap, Send, Solve application to record the vandalism. The application works by identifying the location the photo is taken using the phone’s Global Positioning System data. It sends an email to the city council from your email address, including the incident type, notes, address of incident, photo and contact details. The report is then allocated to the city council. Mr Shallcrass doesn’t believe school holidays have anything to do with the rise in graffiti.

Flying high at the beach AN ESTIMATED 7000 people flocked to New Brighton beach on Saturday for the SummerTimes Kite Day event. Run by the city council, the free event attracted families, kite-makers and enthusiasts who battled the 31 deg C heat. One of them was Julie Adam, also known as ‘The Kite Lady’, who lives in Christchurch but travels around New Zealand
running kite-making workshops for children with her business Skylines and Bylines. Ms Adam liaised with some of the guest kite flyers who attended the popular Kite Day event. One of the guests at the event was Perrin Melchior, of Auckland, who uses the recycled skins of damaged kite surfing kites to make intricate 3D and box kites.

Ms Adam says flying a kite is the best way to raise the spirits and is also a great social activity. “Whenever I fly a kite, people come and talk to me. It makes people smile and they’ll come over and tell me stories about kites they used to fly and ask to have a go. There’s a really nice community kind of feeling to it,” she said.

Conor lives the surfing dream SPORTS By Sophie Cornish CONOR MCLENNAN is living every young surfers dream – hitting the school books in the morning and riding waves in the afternoon. The Raglan Surf Academy student recently won the under-18 title at the national surfing championships in Gisborne. Originating from Waimairi Beach, Conor, 17, represented his home club, North Wai Boardriders, in the competition. He moved to Raglan in 2016 to start at the academy. The programme is part of Raglan Area School and was set up in 1998. It allows students to complete NCEA while learning about surfing both in and out of the classroom. “We write reports about surfing, the safety of surfing and trying to get out to surf breaks, then every lunchtime we will finish up and go surfing. It’s a great life, I love it,” said Conor. The national final came down to a tight finish,

which Conor said made time go by “very, very slowly.”
“It was the best feeling ever, I don’t think words can describe
how stoked I was to win that, I’ve been working so hard for it for
the last year and it all paid off. It’s a really good way for me to start the year,” he said. His parents watched on from the beach. “It was a very cool feeling to win in front of my mum and dad . . . to win in front of them was probably the greatest feeling of it all,” he said. The former Christchurch Boys’ High School student won another national title in 2014 at the national scholastic secondary schools championship. He was also the under-17 Billabong grom series champion last year. Conor is already looking ahead to the future, hoping to secure himself a spot in the New Zealand under-18 junior worlds team, which he narrowing missed out on last year, making a reserve spot. “This year I’m going all out for it,” he said. After finishing year 13, Conor wants to work towards gaining sponsorship and competing in some qualifying series events.

By Gordon Findlater THREE YEARS ago Englishman Harry Weeds was representing his county on the lush grass courts of Wimbledon. At the weekend, he won the West Coast Open while sleeping in his car at a campground. “I spent the first night in my car but had to have the door open all night because it was stinking hot. I splashed out on Saturday night and stayed in a cabin,” said Weeds. Now a Woolston resident and Cashmere Tennis Club member, he dominated the cultured astroturf at the Grey United Tennis Club going unbeaten over two days of competition. The 23-year-old decided to enter the tournament due to the holiday break in the Canterbury premier inter-club competition and to also explore the sights of Greymouth. Weeds went through the tour-
nament relatively untested until his final match against Vaughan Kingi. Weeds found himself down a break in both sets of the match but rallied to win 7-6, 6-4. He also teamed up with Kingi to win the doubles title. Weeds
was awarded $200 for winning the singles title and $75 for the doubles. “It was a successful trip. That covered all of my petrol, food and accommodation,” said Weeds. He celebrated his win by
visiting the Monteith’s Brewing Co and spending some of his prize money on beer tasting and fries. “The Golden Lager was my favourite. It was a very refreshing drop after a gruelling two days
of battle on the West Coast,” said Weeds. In June, he moved to Christchurch from Norwich, England, for what he describes as a working adventure. Weeds has played on a number of courts at Wimbledon during his time in England. In 2014, he represented his county, Norfolk, in a match against the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Retaining his West Coast titles in 2019 has already been added to his to-do list while in New Zealand. “I’ll definitely be back. Greymouth has given itself a special place in my heart.”

Shoot-off goes to Brettkelly FORMER Christchurch Boys’ High golfer Dominic Brettkelly won the Canterbury stroke play in a sudden death shoot-off. He, along with Rangiora’s Kazuma Kobori, were tied on 212 after three rounds forcing a shoot-off which Brettkelly won on the second hole at the Waitikiri Golf Club on Sunday. He also won the best under-19 score title. Burnside High’s Juliana Hung won the senior women’s title shooting 75, 69 and 68 for a combined 212 six shots ahead of Jeonghyun Lee. A Canterbury Golf spokeswoman said the full field of 96 players had great conditions over the weekend but also playing a course which was in excellent condition. “The field was strengthened with over 30 entries from outside the region, predominately due to the enhanced initiative formed with Otago and Southland Golf this year,” she said. Brettkelly was also the winner of the inaugural Ron Clement Memorial Trophy which was presented by Ron’s wife Rae and daughter Tracy. “Clements was heavily involved in the development of junior golf and so it is fitting that this year we now have the Ron Clements Memorial Trophy which is awarded for the best under-19 boys score,” she said.

Her highlights included winning the New Zealand amateur stroke play championship and being the only New Zealand amateur to make the half-way cut in the LPGA Tour New Zealand Women’s Open. Those performances helped her secure a golf scholarship to the University of Southern California which she will start after her time with Ko. Ko, who signed to play with PXG clubs last year, said the motivation behind the scholarship is so she can give back to the game by inspiring the next generation of females to strive for the top to see what it takes to get there and help grow the
number of New Zealanders competing with her on the LPGA Tour. Ko is excited at the opportunity to host Garvey and Zheng and proud to be able to provide support back to females in golf to show recognition of the support she received along her journey. “I received support from so many people as I grew up and I’m proud to be able to give something back,” Ko said. “I am really pleased to be able to work with New Zealand Golf and use the scholarship with the intention to help the next wave of young golfers rise and compete on the LPGA Tour.” Through the Lydia Ko Scholarship, both New Zealand Golf and Ko hope to attract more interest from the emerging talent within the women’s game. Last year the recipients of the scholarship were Alanna Campbell and Momoka Kobori, of Rangiora, who have both taken up scholarships to Iowa State University and Pepperdine University respectively.

BLUEBERRY AND NECTARINE ROSE WINE DESERT Ingredients 1½ cups rosé wine ½ cup caster sugar 1 Tbsp gelatine 1 cup blueberries 2 nectarines Serving of vanilla ice cream Directions Combine the wine and sugar in a saucepan. Stir over medium heat for 5-6min or until the sugar is completely dissolved and the wine comes to a simmer.

8 lamb loin chops 1 handful fresh parsley

2 lemons 3 garlic cloves 2 tsp mint 1 pinch to taste salt and freshly ground pepper 2 Tbsp oil
Combine rind of one lemon, two tbsp lemon juice, crushed garlic, mint (dried), salt, pepper and oil in a small bowl. Place lamb chops (mid-loin) in a shallow dish and pour
Reduce heat to low. Transfer 1/4 cup of the hot wine mixture to a small bowl and sprinkle over the gelatine, stirring to dissolve. Pour the gelatine mixture into the rest of the hot wine and stir well. Remove from heat and set aside for 10min to cool but not set. Divide half the blueberries among four serving glasses. Peel and slice one of the nectarines and divide between the glasses. Carefully pour half the wine over the fruit and refrigerate for 30min. Top with remaining blueberries, nectarine and wine, then cover glasses with plastic cling film and refrigerate until set. Serve with vanilla ice cream.

Lincoln Decision Day helps students choose future 2018 has come around quickly. Maybe school is fast becoming a memory, or perhaps you are looking for a new direction. If you are new to tertiary study, 2018 might even be fees free, giving you the perfect start to your academic study. On 25 January Lincoln University is holding its Decision Day event on campus, from 9am to 4pm. Experts will be available to answer your questions about what to study, help you enrol and discuss your options so that the decision about where to study becomes easier. Lincoln is gearing up for a big year, adding new majors to its popular Commerce degrees as well as new programmes, to make sure it is offering choice to students. Students are now able to include a transferable environmental management major into a commerce degree, ensuring they are ready to meet the environmental challenges they will face in the future. Or they can include Event Management, Parks and Outdoor Recreation, Tourism Management and Water Management, bringing new skills, perspectives and depth to their studies. There are also new separate majors in Supply Chain Management and Global Business in the Bachelor of Commerce as well as new programmes such as the Master of Professional Accounting (CPA) and the Bachelor of Commerce (Agriculture and Professional Accounting), both of which prepare students to qualify as a professional accountants.
There is also the Master of Business in Finance, providing a perspective on finance in New Zealand and international contexts, with reference to sustainability, agribusiness, entrepreneurship, innovation and commercialisation Lincoln still has places in its on-campus student accommodation available, offering an opportunity to enjoy the whole range of student life. MICHAEL Jackson fans will be moonwalking their way to theatres next month as the Michael Jackson HIStory Show makes it's return to New Zealand. Aer an approximate 5000+ performances in the past nine years across Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, Indonesia, South Africa, Canada and the US, word of this show has spread amongst the MJ community, with the show being inundated with pleas to come back to the NZ stage. It was this persistent devotion of admirers that allowed producer John Van Grinsven to hear the requests loud and clear, ultimately leading to the Michael Jackson HIStory Show's return. e world-class production showcases all of Michael Jackson's greatest hits live on stage, complemented by the famous dance moves that fans all know, love and aspire to do. Star of the show, Dantanio, will be accompanied by a lively six-piece band, four groovy backup dancers and a phenomenal lighting team. e show features 40 different customised costumes, twenty of which are for the MJ character alone. Over 100 hours have been dedicated to the lighting design, which makes use of 160+ moving lights and over 2000 lighting cues arranged to punctuate and enhance the musical elements of the show. Playing the role of Michael is Dantanio, a South African theatre performer and solo recording artist who has been studying and impersonating Jackson since the age of nine! e Michael Jackson HIStory Show takes place at the Isaac eatre Royal on Monday 19th February 2018.
